<Tolstoy's Short Stories (1)>

Ivan vs. the devils  After finishing his mission, the first devil went to Ivan’s farm. However, he could not found his  brother. “Something must have happened to my brother. I will have to stop Ivan myself,” said  the first devil, seeing the small hole in the ground.  The little devil flooded the meadow with water.  Ivan tried to cut the glass, but it was very diffi-cult. Soon he became tired. He said to himself,  “I will come back here and will not leave until I have cut all the glass.”  The small devil hid in the glass and Ivan soon returned. As Ivan swung a sickle down, the   devil buried the tip of the blade in the earth. With great effort, Ivan pulled the blade free.  The devil jumped out of the way, but Ivan cut off part of his tail.

자신의 임무를 마친 후 첫째 도깨비가 이반의 농장으로 왔다. 하지만, 첫째 도깨비는 자기 형제를 찾을 수가 없었다. “내 형제에게 무슨 일이 일어난 게 틀림없어. 내가 직접 이반을 막아야겠다.” 첫째 도깨비는 땅에 난 작은 구멍을 보며 말했다.

 

그 꼬마 도깨비는 이반네 목초지를 물에 잠기게 만들었다.

이반은 풀을 베려고 했지만 너무 힘이 들었다. 이반은 곧 녹초가 되었다. “다시 돌아와서는 풀을 모두 벨 때까지 목초지를 떠나지 않을 거야.” 이반이 중얼거렸다.

첫째 도깨비는 풀숲에 숨었고 이반은 곧 다시 돌아왔다. 이반이 낫을 아래로 휘두르자 작은 도깨비는 날 끝을 땅 속에 묻어 버렸다. 이반은 힘을 다해서 낫을 당겼다. 도깨비는 낫을 피하려고 펄쩍 뛰었지만 꼬리의 일부를 잘리고 말았다.

For the rest of the day, the devil tried to stop Ivan. But Ivan finally finished his work. “Now I will start to plant the oats,” said Ivan. The devil thought, “I will certainly stop him tomorrow!” When the devil woke up, he saw that Ivan had planted the oats during the night! “He does not even sleep!” the devil said to himself. “I must think ahead. Ivan will soon need hay. So I will make his hay rotten before he comes to the barn.” After wetting the hay to make it go bad, the devil fell asleep. The next day, Ivan came to the barn with a long pitchfork to pick up the hay. He stuck the pitchfork into the hay and felt it hit something solid. At the same time, there was a strange cry.

그날 남은 시간 내내 첫째 도깨비는 이반을 저지하기 위해 애썼다.

그러나 이반은 결국 일을 끝마쳤다.

“이제 밭에 귀리를 심어야겠다.” 이반이 말했다.

“내일은 이반이 일을 못하게 해야지.” 하고 첫째 도깨비가 다짐했다.

다음 날 아침에 일어난 도깨비는 이반이 밤새 귀리를 심었다는 것을 알았다!

“저 녀석은 잠도 안 자나! 이반보다 앞서서 생각해야 돼. 그는 곧 건초가 필요할 거야. 그렇다면 나는 이반이 건초를 가지러 오기 전에 건초를 몽땅 썩혀야겠다.” 첫째 도깨비는 혼잣말했다.

건초가 상하도록 적셔 놓은 후 첫째 도깨비는 잠이 들었다.

다음 날, 이반은 건초를 퍼 올리기 위해 기다란 갈퀴를 들고 헛간으로 갔다. 건초 속에 갈퀴를 찔러 넣자 뭔가 단단한 것이 부딪히는 느낌이 들었다. 그와 동시에, 건초 속에서 희한한 비명 소리가 들렸다.

There was a little devil stuck in the fork! Ivan shouted, “You said you would go away!” “I am another one,” said the devil. “You met my brother before.” “I do not care who you are. I will kill you any-way,” said Ivan. “Please don’t!” cried the devil. “I can make you soldiers from straw!” “What are soldiers good for?” asked Ivan. “They can do almost anything for you.” replied the devil. “Then show me how to make them,” Ivan said. The little devil rubbed straw together and said some magic words. Soon there were many soldiers marching around the barn. “Now let me go,” said the devil. “Wait,” said Ivan. “Many soldiers need a lot of food. How do I turn them back to straw?”

갈퀴 끝에 작은 도깨비가 꽂혀 있었다.

이반이 소리쳤다. “너 가버리겠다고 했잖아!”

“저는 다른 도깨비에요. 당신이 만난 도깨비는 제 형제에요.”

“네 녀석이 누구든 상관없어. 어쨌든 널 없애 버릴 거야.” 이반이 말했다.

“제발 살려주세요” 전 짚으로 병사를 만들어 드릴 수가 있어요!”

“병사를 뭐에 쓰는데?” 이반이 물었다.

“병사들은 당신을 위해 무슨 일이든 할 수 있죠.” 작은 도깨비가 대답했다.

“그럼 내게 병사 만드는 방법을 알려줘.” 이반이 말했다.

첫째 도깨비는 짚을 비비며 어떤 주문을 외웠다. 곧 많은 병사들이 헛간 주위를 행진하고 있었다.

“이제 저를 놓아 주세요.” 첫째 도깨비가 말했다.

“기다려 봐.” 이반이 말했다. “병사들이 많으면 음식도 많이 필요하잖아. 어떻게 하면 병사들을 다시 짚으로 되돌릴 수 있지?”

< Tolstoy's Short Stories(4)> “Just say the words: ‘So many soldiers, so much straw.’ Then they will disappear,” said the devil. “Fine,” said Ivan. “You may go, and God bless you.” As soon as Ivan said ‘God’, the little devil disap-peared into the ground. All that was left was a small hole. Ivan returned home and was surprised to see his brother Tarras and his wife. Tarras seemed embar-rassed because he had lost all his money. Ivan agreed. “Yes, you are welcome to stay here as long as you want.” Then Ivan sat down to eat. But Tarras’s wife made a bad face. “I cannot eat such a smelly farmer,” she said. Tarras said, “Ivan, my wife cannot eat with you. Go to the porch and eat by yourself.” “Alright,” said Ivan. “I have to feed the horses soon anyway.”     ▣해석▣     “그냥 이 말만 하세요. ‘병사의 수만큼 짚이 되어라’ 라고요. 그러면 병사들은 사라질 거에요.” 첫째 도깨비가 말했다. “좋아. 가도 좋아. 네게 신의 은총이 있길 바란다.” 하고 이반이 말했다. 이반이 ‘신’이라고 말하자마자 도깨비는 땅 속으로 사라져 버렸다. 남은 것은 작은 구멍뿐이었다. 집으로 돌아와 이반은 작은 타라스와 그의 아내를 보고 깜짝 놀랐다. 타라스는 재산을 모두 잃어서 난처한 것 같았다.   “잘 지내고 있지, 이반. 새로운 사업을 시작할 수 있을 때까지 우리가 여기 머물러도 되겠냐?” 하고 타라스가 말했다. “그럼요, 원하는 만큼 여기서 지내세요.” 하고 이반이 대답했다. 그러고 나서 이반은 식사를 하기 위해 식탁에 앉았다. 그러자 타라스의 아내가 얼굴을 찌푸렸다. “나는 저런 냄새 나는 농부와 함께 식사할 수 없어요.” 타라스의 아내가 말했다. “이반, 네 형수가 너와 함께 식사하지 못하겠다고 하는구나, 너는 현관에 나가서 혼자 먹는 게 어떻겠니?” 타라스가 말했다. “알겠어요. 어차피 곧 말들에게 먹이를 줘야 하니까요.” 이반이 대답했다.                                                     be welcome to                     마음대로 ~하다 as long as                           ~하는 만큼 오래 make a face                        표정을 짓다 smelly                                냄새 나는 by oneself                           혼자서 feed                                   먹이(먹을 것)을 주다
